It's important to stand out in a crowd. Lately I've been spending lots of time in huge crowds of people. The X Factor auditions here in the Czech and Slovak Republic were not nearly as insane as the casting call I went to in San Francisco two years ago, but if there's one thing I learned from that awful let down, it's that you've got to be fearlessly yourself.
In my case that means lots of color and a splash of pattern.
My outfit today was centralized around the black shirt with the blue floral pattern. I really wanted to make it pop, so I added a blue eyeliner to my waterline.
When it comes to mixing patterns, it takes a certain skill. First, you should make sure the patterns are all in different textures. Second, if all the patterns have a color in common, it's easier to mix them. For example, a red and white striped shirt would not look cute with a yellow and pink striped skirt! But if the skirt had either red, white, or a contrasting color (black, blue), it would be ok.
You can see this rule in my outfit.
- Brown suede boot + brown leather bag + faux leopard coat = earth tones
- Red beret + red-orange lips + red nail accent = warm tones
- Black waistcoat + black eyeliner + black tights = strong basics
- Blue floral pattern + blue blazer + blue eyeliner = cool tones, contrasting warm tones
Total = killer outfit :)
